BabylonCinema of Dislocation
One of the great British cult films, the restored Babylon remains a potent, dub-infused portrait of life on the fringes in Thatcher-era London.
Franco Rosso’s film premiered at the 1980 Cannes Film Festival but remained unreleased in America for decades out of fears it would incite racial tension. Brinsley Forde, founding member of iconic British reggae outfit Aswad, plays Blue, an aspiring DJ who faces down poverty, corrupt cops and skinheads in his fight to find musical success. With stunning cinematography from Academy Award-winner Chris Menges and a soundtrack that mixes incredible reggae, dub and dancehall tunes, Babylon remains a powerful document of social unrest.
