Set amid the devastation of war-torn Leningrad, this powerful post-World War Two tale collected the Un Certain Regard Best Director Award at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival.
A tale of two women, Beanpole is a spellbinding portrait of Iya (who earns the eponymous nickname ‘Beanpole’ from her towering height) and her close friend Masha, who is still returning from the frontlines. In her absence, Masha entrusts the care of her young child to Iya. But when tragedy strikes, their relationship grows darker and more complex. Russian director Kantemir Balagov delivers an incredible realisation of a devastated cityscape that is filled with colour and life amid the desolation of war.
