Turner Prize-nominee Phil Collins invites us into New York’s ‘Bring Down The Walls’ project, an anti-incarceration movement that uses house music to fight for social justice.
Born out of Chicago’s post-disco underground club scene in the early 1980s, house music has a longstanding history as a voice for repressed and marginalised communities across America. More than thirty years later, collectives in New York are continuing to use the dance floor as a transformative space of connection and liberation to bring down the physical walls of the prison–industrial complex. This is a discursive and celebratory story of personal and collective liberation, as told by the people who have experienced the injustice of the prison system firsthand.
