PANEL DISCUSSION: Women Writing the Fantastic

PANEL DISCUSSION: Women Writing the Fantastic Sat 05 Oct
TIX AT VENUE ONLY 03:25pm 60mins State Library of Queensland

Science fiction and fantasy may have been primarily male-dominated genres, but they have also been the site of revolutionary writing by women, from Mary Shelley and Ursula K Le Guin to Octavia E Butler and Ann Leckie. Why does speculative fiction provide such fertile ground for viewpoints that rail against the norm? Inspired by the documentary Worlds of Ursula K Le Guin 2018, which investigates the remarkable life and legacy of the late feminist author through archival footage and interviews filmed before her death, this panel of equally notable women discuss Ursula K Le Guin’s influence on feminist, utopian and fantasy fiction. Join panel moderator and award-winning sci-fi writer Marianne de Pierres, bestselling Australian fantasy authors Isobelle Carmody and Lian Hearn alongside contemporary artist Emily Floyd, who uses Le Guin’s text in her work, for a  conversation about feminist imaginings of the future.

Get tickets to see Worlds of Ursula K Le Guin beforehand.
