White Riot, Rubika Shah’s compelling look at the nexus of late 1970s British punk music, activism and DIY media has powerful resonance with movements around the world. Just a few years later, Brisbane would become a hot spot for protest against the Bjelke-Petersen government with a rising land rights movement focused on Musgrave Park’s tent city and protests against the impending Commonwealth Games. Dr John Willsteed, Senior Lecturer in Music at QUT’s School of Creative Practice and mainstay of Brisbane’s music scene discusses the local similarities and divergences with musician Luke Peacock (Halfway/The Painted Ladies) and Andy Nehl, Senior Lecturer, Television & Online Content at Griffith Film School, and a former journalist with Brisbane community radio 4ZZZ.
