A breathless coming-of-age tale of two fierce young women who must draw on their resilience and friendship to be free of their tumultuous home lives.
Firecrackers opens with a girl-on-girl fistfight in which Lou gives as good as she gets while being cheered by onlookers. It’s the last day of high school and the thick-as-thieves friends Lou and Chantal are aching to be free of their deadbeat town and trailer park homes. But freedom may come at a higher price than either are willing to pay, as toxic ex-boyfriends, ex-addict mothers and reckless decisions threaten their plans to escape to New York. This immediate portrait of a wild and vulnerable transition to adulthood premiered at the Toronto Film Festival and features searing performances by the film’s two leads, newcomers Michaela Kurimsky and Karena Evans.
