In the besieged Syrian city of Aleppo, a young journalist makes the gut-wrenching decision to raise her family amid the chaos. A Cannes 2019 Golden Eye Documentary Award winner.
Waad al-Kateab lives in Aleppo on the cusp of a revolution against the dictatorial Assad regime. When the city comes under siege, she makes the impossible choice to stay to document the struggle and help her doctor husband establish a hospital. Soon she becomes pregnant and the couple must struggle to maintain a family in the face of overwhelming adversity as their hospital endures daily bombings. The riveting footage she captures reveals a community whose humanity and humour shine through despite the bleakest of circumstances.
Narrated by al-Kateab as a letter to her newborn daughter, this powerful and ultimately optimistic story shows the resilience of the human spirit against insurmountable odds.
