Leave No Trace, by Oscar-nominated director Debra Granik (Winter’s Bone 2010), is a flawless coming-of-age depiction of familial love and life on the social fringe.
Featuring impeccable lead performances, Leave No Trace follows father and daughter as they navigate a world shaped by shadows. Reclusive veteran Will (Ben Foster) lives off-the-grid with his teenage daughter Tom (Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie), their encampment in the dense parkland on the outskirts of Portland, Oregon, offering a semblance of peace from his Iraq war-induced PTSD. Will’s hypervigilance sees them withdraw almost entirely from the outside world, moving often and living largely from the land. When circumstances force them back into a well-meaning, if ill-fitting, society, they must decide if the way back is also the way forward.
