Marianne and Leonard: Words of LoveDocumentaries
A tender portrait of the long romance between Leonard Cohen and Marianne Ihlen, who inspired Cohen’s beloved songs ‘So Long, Marianne’ and ‘Bird on the Wire’.
The couple met on the Greek island of Hydra in 1960 — at the time, a veritable bohemian paradise for artists and writers — when Cohen was still an aspiring novelist. They began a relationship that lasted for years but grew apart as Cohen’s musical career began to blossom; their friendship, however, lived on until their deaths in 2016. Nick Broomfield’s documentary is a touching tribute to the roles they played in each other’s lives and presents a rare opportunity to understand Ihlen as more than a mere muse.
