Celebrated photographer Martha Cooper’s images of subway graffiti in 1970s New York helped turn ridiculed street art into a global movement.
Australian director Selina Miles’s debut documentary chronicles the birth of an art movement that began in after-hours train yards. The first ‘girl’ intern at National Geographic and young photojournalist for The New York Post, Cooper captured a clandestine street culture through her ever-curious lens. An early proponent of this controversial art form, her iconic publication Subway Art was treasured by a burgeoning generation of aspiring street artists.
Martha: A Picture Story features some of the biggest names in the graffiti world, and The Hollywood Reporter declared it ‘eighty of the happiest minutes documentary-lovers are likely to spend in a theater this year’.
