Matangi / Maya / M.I.A.Documentaries
A Sundance award winner, Matangi / Maya / M.I.A. utilises M.I.A.’s personal video footage to bridge the gap between the musician’s global pop stardom and her activism on behalf of Sri Lanka’s Tamil people.
Emigrating from strife-ridden Sri Lanka to the UK as a young child, Mathangi ‘Maya’ Arulpragasam’s first ambition was to become a documentary filmmaker. It was, however, as a hip-hop artist that she found critical acclaim though her album Arular 2005 and a Grammy nomination for the song ‘Paper Planes’. An eye-opening visit to her rural hometown in her early 20s fuelled not only her sonic eclecticism but also her engagement with global issues and her desire to effect social change through her music and activism.
