A tender-hearted take on male friendship in which a kiss changes everything, by French-Canadian film-making tour de force Xavier Dolan.
The kiss in question is between Maxime (Xavier Dolan) and his long-time friend, the sensible lawyer Matthias (Gabriel D’Almeida Freitas) — a playful dare during a boys’ weekend with a group who’ve known each other since high school. The friends have reached an inertia in their late twenties and early thirties: if this is adulthood, are their work, relationship and life choices what they really want? A superbly acted character study that premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Matthias and Maxime sings in the details of interactions between protagonists, the camera lingering on unguarded expressions and stolen glances.
