Set against the backdrop of an eight-hour live performance of his album Sleep in a central Los Angeles park, this mesmerising documentary reveals the story behind the landmark work of composer Max Richter.
From dusk to dawn, German-born British composer Max Richter and ensemble perform continuously. Described by the composer as both a lullaby and a protest to our industrialised, intense, mechanised way of living, the performance of piano, strings, vocal and electronic tones capture the liminal moment between wakefulness and sleep. Insightful interviews with Richter, the artist Yulia Mahr and others unpack the creative process, the development of the project from germination to its world tour and his broader practice composing music for stage, ballet, opera and film. Max Richter’s Sleep is a sumptuous immersion in the sublime and as close to the original experience as film can achieve.
