Katrin Gebbe’s Pelican Blood is an engrossing and cerebral horror-drama about the painful dilemma a mother faces regarding her newly adopted child.
Nina Hoss (Phoenix 2014) is Wiebke, a single mother and horse trainer who adopts Raya, a five-year-old girl from Bulgaria, to join her and her older daughter Nicolina at their ranch. After returning to Germany, Raya begins to have increasingly violent outbursts that cause Wiebke to suspect there could be more sinister forces at play. Gebbe’s film is a chilling slow burn of a film anchored by a commanding lead performance from Hoss and a powerful undercurrent of empathy amidst the dread.
