The mutual feelings between a live-in maid and her ‘sir’ are ever so subtly rendered in this debut feature selected for Cannes Critics’ Week.
Ratna, a young window, leaves her regional village for Mumbai to pursue her own career. Before it can be realised, she works as a live-in maid for a rich man, Ashwin, whom she calls her ‘sir’. Her life is confined to domestic duties, yet between those closed doors in an enclosed space, feelings brew between two souls who are both gentle and sensitive towards each other’s feelings. Writer-director Rohena Gera excels in portraying intimate, suggestive details that are always held back at the right moment, making the audience wonder and desire.
