The Sapphires

Features
Director: Wayne Blair 2012 103 Minutes PG

The feel-good true story of four young Indigenous Australian women who became a powerhouse vocal group in the late 1960s, The Sapphires is a rollicking journey punctuated by rousing musical performances.

An adaptation of the popular stage production, Wayne Blair’s film captures the heart and soul of The Sapphires’ story. After being discovered at an amateur talent show by a wily manager (Chris O’Dowd), the group ends up in Vietnam, performing for the troops as the war rages on around them. Beyond being a showcase for the impressive vocal talents of the four leads (Deborah Mailman, Jessica Mauboy, Shari Sebbens, Miranda Tapsell), the film uses its effervescent energy to examine Aboriginal identity and race relations in the 1960s.
