THE TWENTIETH CENTURYFeatures
Matthew Rankin’s strikingly bonkers comedy about the fictionalised early years of former Canadian Prime Minister Mackenzie King is an absurdist blend of the worlds of Monty Python and Guy Maddin.
No history lessons are required to prepare for this wicked and wild take on one of Canada’s most esteemed political figures. Shooting on a mixture of Super 8 and 16mm, Rankin blends together animation and live action to create a colourful rendering of early twentieth-century electioneering. The aspirational Mackenzie King (Dan Beirne) must quash not only his political rivals but also his all-consuming shoe fetish, and the destructive Oedipal relationship he shares with his mother, to reach the highest office of the land. A brilliantly inventive comedy.
