German auteur Christian Petzold relocates this adaptation of a Holocaust drama to a contemporary Marseilles, creating a Kafkaesque fable about human migration and dislocation.
Based on a 1942 novel by Anna Seghers, Transit follows refugee Georg (a mesmerising Franz Rogowski, who also appears in BIFF’s In the Aisles 2018) as he flees occupied Paris to the port city of Marseilles. His journey fatefully crosses that of the subversive writer Weidel whose suicide prompts Georg to assume his identity in the hopes of using his papers to secure passage aboard a ship to Mexico. Complicating matters are his haunting encounters with Weidel’s estranged wife, Marie (Paula Beer), who desperately shadows his movements across the city in search of the absent writer.
