Paul Dano’s empathetic and remarkably assured directorial debut Wildlife stars Carey Mulligan and Jake Gyllenhaal as a couple navigating the complexities of marriage.
Set in the early 1960s in an idyllic small town, Wildlife boasts powerful performances by Gyllenhaal and Mulligan as Jerry and Jeanette Brinson, parents to 14-year-old Joe, played by Australia’s own sensational Ed Oxenbould. When the Brinson’s marriage falls apart, Joe begins to wonder what his role in this newly fractured family might be. An intelligent and emotionally acute debut, adapted from Richard Ford’s 1990 novel of the same name, the delicately directed film is buoyed by one of Mulligan’s career-best performances.
