THE 2023 FESTIVAL

The 29th annual of the Brisbane International Film Festival (BIFF) lights up screens across Brisbane’s cultural heartland celebrating film through an exciting program of World Premieres, Australian Premieres, Queensland Premieres and special events from October 26 through to November 5, 2023.

BIFF is a carnival of cinema in Brisbane’s cultural heartland showcasing World and Australian premieres, exclusive preview screenings and filmmaking talent within Red Carpet screenings, industry panels, filmmaker Q&As, and networking opportunities.

BIFF proudly profiles our region to filmmakers and screen industry professionals on a national and global stage with a spotlight on the thriving industry in South East Queensland.

THE HISTORY

In 1992, Queensland’s largest celebration of film culture, the Brisbane International Film Festival (BIFF) opened with what would become Baz Luhrmann’s smash hit and now classic, Strictly Ballroom, which premiered in Cannes Film Festival and then bought straight to the Regent Theatre in the beating heart of Brisbane for Australian audiences to devour.

Since those incredible beginnings, more than 600,000 festival goers have immersed themselves in the BIFF experience which over time has assisted in raising the profile of cinema and film making in Queensland.

Each year BIFF’s impressive programming showcases brand new World and Australian premieres, exclusive preview screenings and filmmaking talent with a line-up of exciting films, pop-up cinemas, red carpet screenings, industry panels, filmmaker Q&As, and special events drawing film lovers and screen industry professionals together, celebrating the vibrant Industry that is flourishing within South East QLD.

Over time, BIFF has had a number of incarnations and in 2021, Screen Queensland proudly awarded the management rights for at least the next three years to Film Fantastic Ltd, a private not-for-profit organisation who also manage the annual and now iconic Gold Coast Film Festival.
